MICHAEL S. WATERMAN

UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR EMERITUS

The field of quantitative and computational biology was developed by University Professor Emeritus, Dr. Michael S. Waterman.

Professor Waterman joined the faculty at USC in 1982 and subsequently launched the first Ph.D. program in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics in the world with the opening of the Computational Molecular Biology group within the Department of Mathematics.

In 2021, the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences welcomed the newly formed Department of Quantitative and Computational Biology fulfilling Professor Waterman's vision of creating a world class program with both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
